Regular oil checks are crucial for maintaining your car’s engine health. Here’s a quick guide on how to check your oil in just five easy steps:
Step 1: Prepare Your Vehicle
- Park on Level Ground: Ensure your car is parked on a flat surface to get an accurate reading.
- Turn Off the Engine: Switch off the engine and wait a few minutes for the fluid to settle back into the fluid pan.
Step 2: Locate the Dipstick
Open the hood of your car and find the lubricant dipstick. It usually has a brightly colored handle (often yellow or orange) for easy identification.
Step 3: Remove and Clean the Dipstick
- Pull Out the Dipstick: Carefully remove the dipstick from its tube.
- Wipe It Clean: Use a clean rag or paper towel to wipe off any fluid residue for an accurate reading.
Step 4: Check the Oil Level
- Reinsert the Dipstick: Insert it back into the tube and then pull it out again.
- Read the Level: Look at the tip of the dipstick. There will be markings indicating the fluid level. If it’s below the minimum mark, you need to add lubricant.
Step 5: Add Oil if Necessary
If the fluid level is low:
- Remove the Oil Filler Cap: Locate and remove the cap on top of the engine labeled ” lubricant.”
- Add lubricant: Use a funnel to pour in the appropriate type of lubricant, checking the level frequently to avoid overfilling.
